Senator Sweeney represents the Third Legislative District, which includes portions of Gloucester and Cumberland counties and all of Salem County. Senator Sweeney has served as Senate president since January 2010. He was majority leader in 2008 and 2009. He won election to the Senate in 2001 and was re-elected five times.
An ironworker by trade, Senator Sweeney has sponsored and supported measures to advance organized labor and protect the rights of workers. He sponsored laws that created the state’s Paid Family Leave program and bills to raise New Jersey’s minimum wage.
